Every purchase helps someone affected by leprosy
The gift of a walking frame provides people affected by teprosy with the vital support and stability they need to move safely and confidently. Step by step, it helps them stay mobile, maintain their independence, and face the world with dignity.
Sadly, Nagammal's leprosy was not caught in time, leaving her with permanent nerve damage. For many leprosy patients, injuries go unnoticed because they have lost sensation in their hands and feet. A simple cut or wound can develop into serious infection and reduced mobility. This is exactly what happened to Nagammal, who repeatedly injured herself without realising it. Years of wounds, ulcers and infections left her without fingers or toes, making everyday tasks difficult and walking unsafe and unsteady.
For many years, her husband looked after her, but eventually he could cope no longer and she was left to live alone in a broken-down goat shed. Some years later, when terrible floods hit Tamil Nadu, a Leprosy Mission field worker found Nagammal abandoned, hungry, shivering and suffering from ulcers infected by the dirty flood water.
At a Leprosy Mission Hospital she was given food, compassion and care. Her injuries were treated and surgery created a fork at the end of her arm so she can now pick things up.
'Now I can cook my own food and I can go to the bathroom on my own. When others offer to help I say "Don't worry sister, I can manage by myself'" Now I'm fully independent.'
At one time, Nagammal was forced to crawl across the floor if she needed something, now a walking frame gives her the confidence to stand upright and move safely, reducing the risk of falls
