U Paul's Story
Families across Myanmar are living through the devastating effects of civil war. Homes have been destroyed, communities displaced and healthcare services disrupted, making basic medical care increasingly difficult to access.
For people affected by leprosy, the consequences can be devastating.
At 83 years old, U Paul knows what it feels like to be forgotten. Living in a remote village, he developed leprosy and gradually lost sensation in his hands and feet. Injuries became serious wounds and his fingers became clawed. Fear and misunderstanding also left him increasingly isolated.
Then, a trained community volunteer from The Leprosy Mission found U Paul, recognised the signs of leprosy and connected him with the treatment and support he desperately needed.
Today, many others are still waiting for that same support. Despite the dangers created by conflict, dedicated health volunteers continue to reach remote communities, finding people affected by leprosy and helping them access treatment before permanent disabilities take hold.
