Nuveena's Story
Nuveena, pictured on the front of the card, was diagnosed with leprosy in 2020 and received six months of Multi-Drug Therapy. Thankfully, her leprosy was detected early, and she is now cured with no long-term disabilities. However, life has been tough for her family; her mother has also received treatment for leprosy, and her father is currently being treated for cancer, reducing their opportunities to work and leaving them with very little money to spare.
Nuveena received financial support to complete her education. After studying three A-levels, she hopes to continue into further education because she dreams of becoming a politician. “I would be an honest politician who eliminates corruption and changes the world for the better,” she told us with a grin.
In Sri Lanka, Nuveena and her family are active members of their local Leprosy Association street theatre group, performing plays to raise awareness of leprosy and to encourage people to care for the environment.
