If leprosy isn’t caught early, some patients lose all sense of feeling in their feet, so they might step on a nail and not feel anything. This means that their feet get injured very easily and wounds can become badly infected. In the most serious cases, amputation might become necessary. The gift of a wheelchair gives patients freedom and independence.

anju's story
Anju was diagnosed with leprosy in her twenties, but when her treatment required an extended stay in hospital, her mother-in-law would not allow her to leave home. She was almost 50 when she arrived at The Leprosy Mission’s Anandaban Hospital. Sadly, by this time, her legs were so badly infected that they had to be amputated. Anju was dreading a life shuffling around on her bottom, constantly depending on others, so she was delighted to receive a wheelchair to take home, meaning she can move independently and even look after her grandchildren.
This generous gift means another patient, like Anju, will receive a wheelchair to help restore their independence.
