Here's an update from Sri Lanka on a Gift for Life that has made a real difference.
To many of us, life without a toilet in our home is almost unimaginable. Yet for countless families around the world, this is an everyday reality.
In parts of Sri Lanka, children and adults are forced to go to the toilet out in open fields - a situation that is unhygienic, undignified, and often dangerous.This was the reality for Ajai and Thibekka, and their twin girls Kavina and Kabitha.
The family had thankfully been receiving MDT treatment and been cured of leprosy, marking the start of a hopeful new chapter in their lives.
But daily life was still filled with risk and worry. With no toilet, they had to dig a hole outside their house for their daughters to use. During the monsoon season, heavy rains would flood the area, making it unsafe and unhealthy.
And even in dry weather, there was always the fear of snakes, including cobras hiding in the grass.
A simple, safe latrine might sound like a small thing. But for this family, it meant absolutely everything:
Privacy, dignity, protection from disease and peace of mind.
That simple but life changing gift became a reality!
Today, Ajai and Thibekka’s family are using their new clean, hygienic latrine safely, confidently, and without fear!
No more dodging dangerous wildlife. No more risk to their children’s health during flooding rains. And the transformation doesn’t stop there...
The twin girls are also loving the new water well in their village gifted by The Leprosy Mission!
After school, their favourite thing to do is play in the clean, fresh water laughing together in the warm heat, carefree and full of joy!
